Keeping the flame as perpendicular (90 degrees) to the metal surface as best as possible for a square edge is the aim while cutting with a CNC plasma machine. But the nature of the plasma process causes the cut edge to often have a small bevel or angle. Whereas the "bad" side of the cut may have a bevel of 3 to 8 degrees, most traditional plasma systems have the bevel angle on the "good" side of the cut, usually between 1 and 3 degrees. More square cuts follow from even lower bevel angles attained by high-precision or high-density plasma cutters. Maintaining the proper settings and keeping the torch perpendicular to the workpiece will help to influence the angle by means of torch height, cutting speed, and direction. While a perfectly square (0-degree) cut is rare even with the greatest setup, with plasma cutting a small tilt is normal and allowed.
