In India, food grains, fruit, vegetables, meat, poultry and fish, are very susceptible to microbial contamination and spoilage and require stringent preservation methods. One such preservation method is the use of a chest freezer for the storage of frozen food. Chest Freezers are the most economical freezer. It is named thus because of it's shape like a large box or chest with a hinged lid that opens upward. Because of this lid, a chest freezer requires enough space with plenty of headroom. 

A chest freezer is nothing different but a storage unit for frozen food, such as: meat, poultry, fish, prawns, some vegetables and some fruits. The components of a chest-type freezer :

Chest freezers doesn't have any fan, which limits the air circulation and thus causes the temperature to be inconsistent, although as long as it can maintain a temperature below freezing, it will not affect the foods negatively. Since warmer air rises and cold air lowers, people usually store meats and other larger items in the lower parts of the freezer so that they will freeze solidly and stay preserved for several months. Smaller items such as bags of frozen vegetables and pre-cooked meals can be stored in these for easy retrieval. Designing of an condenser coil, evaporator coil and capillary tube are investigated through the development of the storage periods in proper terms of steady state and cyclic performance, by which it optimizes the quantity of refrigerant charge, with strict adherence to the standards and requirement required for maintaining an internal temperature of -23 °C at 43 °C ambient. In the design of the refrigeration system for a freezer, rigid standards are maintained so that there is no need of compromising with the quality and flexibility of the system.  The system is designed for optimum efficiency with moderate costs level; efficient equipment design will result in energy savings, which reduces the proficient running costs. Removing if any dust particles or contaminants are present in the system can develop the performance of the total system. Placement of the chest freezer also plays a major role in reducing the load on the system.  If exposed to the higher temperatures, the capacity requirement and power requirement will me more. Future work requirement would be the fulfilled with the development of an even more energy efficient freezer for working at different ambient conditions and with alternative refrigerants, which is more economical and more feasible at worse breakdown conditions.
