What are the myths about AC that you should stop believing?

What are the myths about AC that you should stop believing?

June 28, 2021

Nowadays, air conditioning systems can be found almost anywhere. If you reside in a hotter climate, these cooling units can be found in every home, school, workplace, and marketplace in your town. Their appeal stems from the comfort and convenience they provide, which makes them well worth the investment.

Because of the prevalence of air conditioning systems, certain myths regarding cooling devices have arisen. Although some of these "myths" may be accurate in specific cases, the vast majority of them are completely absurd and should not be believed.

1. Quick Cooling by Lowering the Temperature

This ridiculous myth was created many years ago when air conditioners were not as widely used as they are now. People would believe anything they thought would work back then because there was no internet and instructions were badly written. As a result, a belief developed: if you want to cool your house quickly, you must reduce the temperature on your thermostat. Surprisingly, many people today still believe in this old myth.

This myth is untrue since reducing the temperature has no effect on the cooling process. The air conditioner will take the same amount of time to cool the room as it would if the temperature were slightly higher. As a result, adjust the thermostat to your preferred setting and wait.

2. The Bigger the System, the Better

This myth appears to have sprung from common sense. You should not believe it, no matter how accurate it appears to be. Today's air conditioning systems are properly tailored to the size of the home.

If you get a smaller unit, it will be needed to work hard to keep your home cool. This will result in inefficiency, and the system will wear down more quickly than it should. Similarly, a larger unit than needed for your home will swiftly cool it down, but it will switch on and off frequently to maintain the temperature.

As a result, you must stop believing this absurd myth and purchase the proper sized air conditioning equipment for your home.

3. Run the Air Conditioner Until It Stops Working

This is yet another absurd myth. Air conditioning systems used to be prohibitively expensive a few decades ago. This meant that only a select few were able to purchase them. As a result, a belief developed that you should let your air conditioner run as long as it can, even if it has outlived its useful life. Surprisingly, many people today still believe in this myth, yet they could not be more mistaken.

4. You Don’t Need to Clean the Fins and Coils

The origin of this strange myth is difficult to trace, but whoever originated it must be a lazy person who dislikes hygiene. It is absurd to believe that anything sitting outside the house 24 hours a day, seven days a week, does not require cleaning. The air conditioning system's condenser unit (outdoor unit) features fins on the cover. The heat from the condenser coil can escape through these fins into the outside air. If these fins become clogged with dirt or debris, the air cannot escape, and the whole system efficiency suffers significantly.

Cleaning the coils and fins is extremely important and should be done at least once a year. If you want your air conditioning system to last as long as possible, you should quit believing this silly notion and maintain it clean.

One Last Thought

Keeping your air conditioning system is critical, but these myths get in the way. Maintaining your system will be easier if you know the facts about common myths. So it's time to cease believing in them right now.

Thank you for sharing that in the event our A/C is emitting warm air, it is important for us to have our air conditioning serviced. I noticed that the air produced by my A/C has been poor. I will definitely proceed to have it serviced by professional technicians.
