Surgical Scrub Sink Station
(145 products available)A Surgical Scrub Sink Station is a purpose-built basin used by surgeons and staff to wash hands plus forearms before any operation. It is made from thick 304-grade stainless steel, 14 - 16 gauge, with rounded, welded corners and a bright #4 polish. Each bowl is sloped, about ten to eleven inches deep, but also twenty to thirty-two inches wide - water drains quickly and germs find no place to hide. Units come as one, two or three bowls side by side - the user starts the water without touching anything - a knee panel, a foot pedal, an infrared eye or an elbow lever opens the valve. A thermostatic mixer holds the water between 95 °F and 110 °F. Soap or alcohol gel arrives through built-in pumps. Strainers block debris, small jets rinse the tap outlet, screens stop splatter as well as a lift-off panel gives access for daily cleaning. The sink stands just outside the operating room - staff spend three to five minutes scrubbing with chlorhexidine or povidone iodine following AORN besides WHO rules, until the bacterial count on skin drops to a safe level. They then put on sterile gown and gloves. A twenty-four to thirty-two inch backsplash, anti-splash dividers or an optional count up timer help the process run smoothly and keep infection rates low. Frequently Asked Questions about Surgical Scrub Sink Station
What is a surgical scrub?
A surgical scrub is a set way to wash with antiseptic. Nurses and operating-room staff use it to clean hands and forearms before an operation cutting the number of microbes so surgical site infections do not start. Antimicrobial agents like chlorhexidine or povidone iodine are applied with a scrub brush or sponge. The wash follows a fixed order - nails first then fingers, palms, backs of hands, wrists plus forearms up to the elbows. The first scrub of the day lasts five to ten minutes - later scrubs last three to five. While rinsing, keep hands raised so water runs down and does not recontaminate the skin. When the rinse is done, put on a sterile gown but also sterile gloves. The word "scrub" also names the sterile clothes worn in the operating room. Good technique removes bacteria that sit on the skin and slows the return of bacteria that live there all the time.
What are the two methods of surgical scrub?
The two main ways to scrub are the counted stroke method and the timed anatomical method. In the counted method, you use a sterile brush soaked in chlorhexidine or povidone iodine. You scrub the nails plus fingertips thirty times with the rough side then give each surface ten strokes. Those surfaces are the four sides of every finger, the palm and the back of the hand. You move up the forearm in halves. The whole job takes three to five minutes. During rinse, you keep the hands higher than the elbows so water runs down away from the clean skin. The timed anatomical method follows the same order but you watch a clock. Two minutes on hands but also fingers, three minutes on forearms - five minutes total. You don’t count strokes - you simply keep moving the brush to cover every spot. Both methods wash off loose germs, push down the normal skin bacteria and stop them from growing back before you put on the sterile gown as well as gloves. Alcohol-based rubs give a waterless option for later scrubs but the traditional scrub remains the rule for the first trip into the operating room.
What is a scrub station?
A scrub station, also known as a surgical scrub sink or unit, is a specialised fixture in operating rooms, sterile processing areas and medical facilities designed for thorough hand and forearm antisepsis before surgical procedures. Typically constructed from type 304 stainless steel with seamless, coved basins for easy cleaning, it features single, dual or triple bays to accommodate multiple users. Key parts are faucets you work with your knee or that run without touch, soap and water dispensers that read your hand with a beam, valves that blend hot plus cold water to one safe temperature and shields that block water spray. Surfaces that kill germs are added, so microbes have less chance to move from one place to another. Foot pedals or sensors let water start without hands - strong jets but also wide drains carry soil away fast. The whole unit meets rules like the AORN guide, cutting wound infection risk - placing every control within easy reach and saving water and soap.
What is the purpose of surgical scrubbing?
Surgical scrubbing cleans the hands and forearms of operating room staff. It removes most of the temporary plus permanent microbes that live on the skin - fewer organisms remain to enter the surgical wound. Running water and an antiseptic like chlorhexidine gluconate or povidone iodine wash away visible soil, skin flakes but also the short term flora that arrive during normal activity. The same antiseptic stays on the skin and keeps the deeper resident bacteria from multiplying for multiple hours. After a five minute scrub the number of colony forming units falls to the lowest level science can measure - trials found no extra benefit in scrubbing for ten minutes. If a glove tears during the operation, the treated skin still carries far fewer organisms - the chance of contamination is small. The scrub, sterile gown as well as gloves together form a continuous barrier that protects the patient and improves the result of any procedure carried out under aseptic conditions.
What are the steps for surgical scrubbing?
Surgical scrubbing follows a clear order so that every part of the hand and forearm is cleaned and stays clean. Before you step into the scrub room, take off rings, watches plus push your sleeves above your elbows. Open the sterile brush or sponge pack without touching the inside. Hold your hands and forearms under the tap so that the water runs off at the level of your elbows. Press the elbow operated dispenser once to collect the antiseptic, like chlorhexidine. For the first wash, work for five minutes. Scrub the nails with the rough side of the sponge for thirty strokes. Give ten strokes to each of the four sides of every finger. Give ten strokes to the palm but also ten to the back of each hand. Scrub the forearm in two bands, from the wrist to the middle of the forearm and from that point to the elbow, always holding the hands higher than the elbows. Let the water run from the fingertips toward the elbows - do not move the arm backward through the water. For the second wash, limit the scrub to the lower two thirds of the forearms as well as stop after three minutes. Finish - taking a sterile towel and patting dry from the hands toward the elbows.
What is the minimum time a surgical scrub should be performed?
The shortest scrub time for any operation after the first one is three minutes - the first scrub each day must last five minutes. Main guidelines and trials set this rule. AORN besides WHO advise a total of three to five minutes with an antiseptic like chlorhexidine, because ten minutes does not kill more bacteria and harms the skin. Trials show that a three minute scrub with a proven soap lowers bacterial counts just as much as a five minute scrub, whereas two minutes leaves the forearms inadequately cleaned. Orthopedic work shows that two minutes plus thirty seconds prevent infection when the user follows the correct steps but labels on the products still require at least three minutes to remove both transient and resident germs. For scrubs that are not the first of the day, an alcohol hand rub shortens the time to ninety seconds.
What is a scrub sink used for?
A scrub sink also called a surgical scrub station, is a fixture used by surgeons, nurses and other operating room staff to wash hands and forearms before an operation. The wash removes transient germs plus lowers the number of resident skin bacteria so that surgical site infections are less likely to occur. The unit is normally built from one piece of 304-grade stainless steel and has a deep basin. Water flows without touching the tap - the user starts it with a knee panel, an infrared sensor or a foot pedal. A thermostatic valve keeps the water at a set temperature but also soap and paper towels are dispensed from fittings built into the sink. The station stands outside the sterile operating room. Staff scrub for three to five minutes with an antimicrobial solution like chlorhexidine and keep the hands higher than the elbows while rinsing so that water does not run back toward the fingers. The sink drains quickly, splash guards contain droplets as well as the surfaces contain an antimicrobial finish - those features let staff clean the unit fast between users and preserve the aseptic conditions required by AORN besides WHO guidelines.
What is the difference between surgical scrubs and regular scrubs?
Surgical scrubs are uniforms made only for the operating room. They are sewn from polyester that resists fluid and carries an antimicrobial finish. Pockets plus seams are few - bacteria have little place to hide. The cloth is green or blue because those hues cut glare and lessen eye strain under the bright lights of surgery. Only surgeons but also other authorised staff wear them. Regular scrubs - sometimes called medical or nursing scrubs - are meant for the rest of the hospital - wards, clinics, laboratories. They are stitched chiefly from cotton blended with a little synthetic fibre so that air passes through and the wearer stays cool during long shifts. They have large cargo pockets, come in many colours as well as prints and fit loosely to let the body move. The two kinds of scrubs part ways on sterility - a surgical set is sealed after it leaves the autoclave and is opened only when the wearer steps into the sterile field. A regular set is washed in the same manner as everyday linen - no special sterilisation is required. Design follows function - surgical scrubs aim to block contamination, while regular scrubs try to combine comfort, storage or a professional appearance.
