A continuous fluid-bed system is a machine in which a continuous flow of “wet” powder, granular or flakes material is conveyed over a perforated bed. Hot drying air is blown through the holes of a perforated plate. The wet solids are lifted from the bottom and causes the solids to behave as a fluid.Fluid bed drying is a process by which particles, typically greater than 50 microns, are fluidized and dried. For the material to become fluidized, the particulates are placed under conditions that cause it to behave like a fluid. FBD is used for drying of different pharmaceutical materials or products and it can easily achieve specific moisture content in granules and powdersThe fluid bed granulation process (also known as agglomeration) involves suspending particles in an air stream and spraying a liquid from the top of the system down onto the fluidized bed (top-down spray). Particles in the path of the spray get slightly wet and become sticky.
