Insulation Piercing Connectors (IPC)IPCs are the primary mechanical connector for covered conductors. They allow for tap-off connections without stripping the insulation, maintaining the conductor's weather resistance and dielectric strength Design: These feature high-strength teeth that pierce through the XLPE/UV-resistant covering to reach the AL59 or AAAC core. Key Feature: Most models use shear-head bolts that break off at a specific torque to ensure a secure, low-resistance connection without damaging the conductor. Voltage Rating: Must be rated for at least 11kV and conform to standards like EN 50397-2 2. Mechanical Shear Bolt Lugs & ConnectorsFor terminal connections (to switchgear or transformers) or straight joints, mechanical shear bolt lugs are preferred over traditional crimping for medium-voltage application Versatility: A single mechanical lug can often cover a wide range of conductor sizes (e.g., 25-95 sq.mm), making them ideal for 55 sq.mm conductors. Material: Typically made from tin-plated aluminum alloy to prevent galvanic corrosion when used with aluminum alloy conductors. Installation: No specialized crimping tools are required; they are installed using standard hex tools or impact wrenches until the bolt head shears off.
