A 220kV 1200 sq. mm Shield Break Joint Kit is a high-voltage (HV) accessory used to connect two sections of Extra High Voltage (EHV) cable while providing an electrical "break" in the metallic screen or sheath. This break is essential for cross-bonding or single-point bonding systems, which reduce circulating sheath currents and improve the overall current-carrying capacity (ampacity) of the cable. Core Functions & Features Sheath Isolation: Unlike a "straight-through" joint, a shield break joint includes an insulating barrier that electrically separates the metallic sheaths of the two connected cables. Bonding Integration: These kits are typically used in conjunction with Link Boxes and Sheath Voltage Limiters (SVL) to manage induced voltages during faults and normal operation. Mechanical Protection: They feature robust outer protection, often using a combination of cast resin, heat shrink, or specialized metal housings to ensure the joint remains watertight and resistant to soil chemicals. Voltage Stress Control: High-quality silicon or EPDM stress cones are used to manage the intense electrical field at the 220kV level. Voltage Grade: 127/220kV (Highest system voltage up to 245kV). Conductor Compatibility: Specifically sized for 1200 sq. mm segmental compacted (Milliken) copper or aluminium conductors. Impulse Withstand: Typically rated for 1050kV (1.2/50 µs wave). Short Circuit Rating: Designed to handle faults up to 50kA for 1 second.
