A sand filter, or sand water filter, makes use of sand to filter water. The water to be purified slowly sinks through the sand of the sand filter, leaving the dirt particles from the water behind in the fine pores of the sand.A sand bed filter is a kind of depth filter. Broadly, there are two types of filters for separating particulate solids from fluids: Surface filters, where particulates are captured on a permeable surface. Depth filters, where particulates are captured within a porous body of material.A biosand filter (BSF) is an adaptation of the traditional slow sand filter, which has been used for community drinking water treatment for 200 years. The biosand filter is smaller (about 1 m tall, 0.3 m wide on each side) and adapted so that it does not flow continuously, making it suitable for use in people's homes.
