Earthing wire, also commonly known as grounding wire or protective earth conductor (PE), is an absolutely critical component in any electrical installation. Its primary function is to provide a safe, low-resistance path for fault currents to flow directly to the earth in the event of an electrical fault, short circuit, or lightning strike. This safeguards people from electric shock and protects electrical equipment from damage. Purpose: Personnel Safety: Prevents electrocution by safely diverting stray currents away from users and into the ground. Equipment Protection: Protects appliances, machinery, and sensitive electronics from damage due to overcurrents or voltage surges. Lightning Protection: Provides a designated path for lightning discharge to safely enter the earth. Material and Construction: Earthing wires are specifically designed for high conductivity and durability. They are typically made from: Copper: The most common and preferred material due to its exceptionally high electrical conductivity and excellent corrosion resistance. It ensures the most effective and reliable path to ground. GI (Galvanized Iron) / Steel: Less common for direct earthing connections in finer gauges, but used for larger grounding electrodes or in some specific applications where cost is a primary concern and lower conductivity is acceptable.
