The bulk milk cooling tank is an important piece of dairy farm equipment.Bulk milk means milk that is purchased by a processor from a person other than a dairy farmer and which is purchased in a container other than the one in which the milk will be resold to a retailer or to a consumer.Plate heat exchangers (PHE), or plate coolers, are the most efficient way to cool milk. A PHE consists of very thin stainless steel plates whereby water flows along one side of each plate and milk flows along the other. This allows heat to be exchanged from the milk to the water via the plate.A Bulk Milk Cooler (BMC) Operator is responsible for operating a large storage tank used for cooling and holding milk at a certain temperature (4*c) until it can be picked up by a milk hauler.It is important to cool milk immediately after milking to reduce bacterial growth. Bulk tanks should operate to maintain milk temperatures below 40 degrees F (4 degrees C) and above freezing.
