An aftercooler is a mechanical cooling unit that operates on the principles of heat exchange between two mediums — usually water and air. Aftercooler units can be used to attain temperatures between 5-20°F immediately after compressed air is released from the compression unit.An aftercooler is a mechanical heat exhanger that is designed to remove the heat-of-compression from the compressed air flow and to prep the air so it can then enter a dryer and/or be used in air-operated equipment.An aftercooler is a heat exchanger that lowers the temperature of air after it has travelled through a diesel engine's turbocharger. The purpose of having a turbocharger is to increase the power and energy efficiency of an engine. In some applications, such as in heavy marine equipment, this extra power comes in handy.
