Heat pump water heaters (HPWHs) are highly efficient water heaters that transfer heat from the surrounding air to the water, instead of generating it directly like conventional electric or gas heaters. They use a refrigeration cycle to capture and move thermal energy, making them much more energy-efficient, with some using two to three times less energy than traditional electric heaters. These systems can be stand-alone or part of a combination space-conditioning system and are often called "hybrid" water heaters because many have backup electric resistance elements for high demand periods.
