Product Details
The external louver protects the outside supply and exhaust wall openings against water penetration. It also blocks the view into the inside of the duct. The water is blocked from entering the duct with air speed up to 3 m/s. The inner frame has build in ledge to avoid water penetration across the louver frame. The terrace is a covered space that is closed off on three sides, but opens to the deck, garden and pool. External louvres bring a strong linearity to the design but are practical and can be shut in times of windy or inclement weather. The kitchen bench extends seamlessly into this area to become a built-in barbecue. The children have their own separate courtyard at the front of the home where these external louvers are in their bedrooms are located but also love to spend time in the north-facing back garden or in the pool. The layout louvers ensures that their parents can easily keep an eye on them at play while working in the kitchen. The external louvres that book-end the covered terrace throw an ever-dynamic pattern of light and dark stripes onto the concrete floors. The handrail on the Kew Residence is discrete, and my clients saved thousands of dollars by using this proprietary system rather than having something engineered. The parts used to fix the external louvres are also a proprietary system. The design of louvers, screens and other types of shades should take exposure into account: Which direction does the window face? Shades for south-facing windows (in the northern hemisphere), for example, should be horizontal to address the high sun, but a western facade (such as the one shown here) should be external louvers to deal with the low sun as it moves on its horizontal course across the sky. louvers were devised inside the Entry, providing shading for the S façade, and privacy from the busy street and neighbors. As the external louvers pivot, it transforms the Entry from transparent to opaque, reinforcing a welcoming gesture as an extension of the public spaces, or conveying privacy desired as an extension of the plinth mass.
