The automatic surface grinder is used to obtain a smooth and fine finish on metallic or non-metallic materials. It uses a circular rotary grinding wheel that remains stationary (but rotates) while the feed table (with the job attached) rotates with a reciprocating motion (left and right) under the grinding wheel.A grinding machine uses an abrasive product — usually a rotating wheel — to shape and finish a workpiece by removing metal and generating a surface within a given tolerance. A grinding wheel is made with abrasive grains bonded together. Each grain acts as a cutting tool, removing tiny chips from the workpiece.A surface grinder is a machine tool used to provide precision ground surfaces, either to a critical size or for the surface finish. The typical precision of a surface grinder depends on the type and usage, however ±0.002 mm (±0.0001 in) should be achievable on most surface grinders.Grinding is used to finish workpieces that must show high surface quality and high accuracy of shape and dimension. It has some roughing applications in which grinding removes high volumes of metal very rapidly.
