The moving blade may also be inclined 0.5 to 2.5°, this angle is called the rake angle, to keep the material from becoming wedged between the blades, however it compromises the squareness of the edge.Rake angle is a cutting edge angle that has large effects on cutting resistance, chip disposal, cutting temperature and tool life. Increasing rake angle in the positive (+) direction improves sharpness. Increasing rake angle by 1° in the positive (+) direction decreases cutting power by about 1%.Positive rake angle implies the sum of the clearance angle and wedge angle is less than 90º. As schematically shown below, positive rake angle offers sharp cutting edge and thus less chip deformation during machining action.
