Selecting an appropriate end mill for machining die steel hardened to an extreme level, such as 68 HRC (Rockwell Hardness C-scale), is crucial for achieving precision and acceptable tool life. These ultra-hard materials require tools made from the most durable cutting materials, typically premium micro-grain solid carbide or Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN), as High-Speed Steel (HSS) is ineffective at this hardness. The end mills are designed with specialized geometry, often featuring a high number of flutes (e.g., 4 to 7 or more) and a variable helix design to enhance stability, reduce chatter and harmonics, and improve material removal rates during high-speed cutting (HSC). Furthermore, a robust, highly heat-resistant coating is essential; the most common is an advanced nanocomposite coating like AlTiN-Nano or a similar high-performance layer, which provides superior hardness, wear resistance, and thermal stability for dry or near-dry high-speed hard milling operations. Corner radius or ball nose geometries are frequently employed to maximize edge strength and improve surface finish, making these tools suitable for precise finishing applications like mold and die work.
