Cam Follower Bearings A cam follower bearing (also called a track follower) is a specialized type of roller or needle bearing designed to follow cam lobes, tracks, or linear paths. Instead of rotating freely like standard bearings, cam followers are mounted on a shaft or stud and are used to guide, transfer motion, or bear loads along a cam profile or track. Key Features Thick outer ring: With a large load-bearing surface to withstand shock and prevent deformation. Rolling elements: Usually needle rollers or cylindrical rollers inside the outer ring. Stud type or yoke type: Stud type → Bearing with a stud (pin/shaft) for mounting. Yoke type → Bearing with a hole for mounting on a shaft. Sealing: Often equipped with seals to retain grease and keep out contaminants. Types of Cam Followers Stud Type Cam Follower – has a stud with threads for easy mounting. Yoke Type Cam Follower – mounted on a shaft, suitable for heavier loads. Crowned or Flat Outer Ring – crowned reduces edge stresses, flat provides full contact. Needle Roller Type – handles higher loads with compact size. Applications Automation & robotics – followers in cam-driven systems. Machine tools – guiding linear or oscillating movements. Textile & printing machinery – precision motion transfer. Packaging & conveyor systems – track guiding and load carrying. Automotive engines – valve train systems (camshaft followers).
