3-ply surgical masks are disposable face masks designed to provide basic protection against airborne particles, fluid splashes, and the spread of germs. The term "3-ply" refers to the mask's construction, which consists of three layers, each serving a specific function: Components of a 3-Ply Surgical Mask: 1. Outer Layer (Hydrophobic Layer): This outermost layer is typically made from non-woven polypropylene fabric. It is water-resistant to protect against droplets, splashes, and large particles that could carry viruses or bacteria. 2. Middle Layer (Filter Layer): This is the most crucial layer, made of melt-blown polypropylene. It acts as a filter to block microorganisms, bacteria, and fine particles from passing through the mask. It is designed to trap particles as small as 1 to 3 microns. 3. Inner Layer (Hydrophilic Layer): The innermost layer is made of soft, non-woven fabric, which absorbs moisture from the wearer’s breath, reducing the buildup of moisture within the mask.
