The Bayer process is regarded as the primary process by which alumina is extracted from bauxite ore. This process is carried out in four steps. This process starts by drying crushed and washed bauxite, usually containing 30–55% aluminum oxide. The bauxite is dissolved in caustic soda to form a slurry, heated to temperatures of about 110–270 deg C. This mixture is then filtered to eliminate the impurities called the "red mud" and is duly discarded. These plants are designed with best quality materials and techniquesThe filtered alumina solution is then transferred into precipitator tanks where it starts to cool and aluminum hydroxide seed, tiny particles are added. These seeds stimulate a precipitation process allowing solid aluminum hydroxide crystals to be formed. All the aluminum hydroxide that settles at the bottom of the tank is removed. Finally, the remaining caustic soda is washed away from aluminum hydroxide, which undergoes various levels of filtering. Finally, hydroxide is heated in a kiln to drive off any water present. After passing through a cooling stage, the fine white powder is produced. It looks much like sugar used in baking but is hard enough to scratch a pane of glass.
