The seeds of the plant are used to extract the oil which is mainly used in food preparations. Oil Properties A colourless or pale-yellow oily liquid with a strong odour Uses Cumin is useful as a warming oil and helps relieve muscular pains and osteoarthritis. In the digestive system, it acts as a stimulant that helps with colic, dyspepsia, flatulence, bloating and indigestion. Therapeutic Properties Antiseptic, anti-spasmodic, antitoxic, bactericidal, carminative, digestive, diuretic, emmenagogue, nervine, stimulant and tonic. Blends Well With Angelica, caraway and chamomile. Summary Cumin oil is extracted by steam distillation from the ripe seed and it is colorless, sometimes with a tinge of yellow which, with age, becomes a deeper yellow. The aroma of the oil is very pungent, reminiscent of anise, but with a very spicy, musky note. Cumin oil aids the digestive system, is helpful for the nervous system as a tonic, and relieves muscular aches and pains. Precautions Non-toxic, non-irritant and non-sensitizing. It does have photo-toxic qualities, so should not be used when the skin will be exposed to sunlight. People with a sensitive skin should avoid it and it should be avoided during pregnancy.
