Carbide is used in other manufacturing purposes and applications as well. It is frequently used for trekking poles, cleats, and ski poles. It is also utilized in the manufacturing of fishing weights and many other mechanisms that require cutting and pulverizing. Carbide tools can withstand higher temperatures at the cutter-workpiece interface than standard high-speed steel tools (which is a principal reason enabling the faster machining).Because of its extremely high hardness, cemented carbide can not be machined by conventional machining technologies like turning, milling or drilling. Cemented carbide has to be machined by grinding with diamond tools or by electrical discharge machining (EDM).Carbides are made by blending micron-sized tungsten carbide particles with Cobalt (or Nickel) powders.
