chaat, (Hindi: “to lick” or “to taste”) a traditional savory snack sold by street vendors in India that originated in the country's northern region and is now popular throughout South Asia and at Indian restaurants worldwide.Chaat as an organized phenomenon or distinct group of dishes, according to culinary anthropologist Kurush Dalal, originated in northern India (now Uttar Pradesh) in the late 17th century during the reign of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan.There are almost more than 500 varieties of Chaat available. Chana chaat goes all the way back the B.C. era in the Uttar Pradesh state of India. Uttar Pradesh is the origin for some of the most powerful empires in India. In addition, today it's known for being the most populous region in the world.The vitamins A and C found in dried red hot chilli peppers are beneficial for the eyes and immunity, respectively. Asafoetida is a source of niacin and riboflavin B vitamins, although cumin also contains vitamin A.
