Copper Nickel (Cu-Ni) sheets are made from copper-nickel alloys, typically containing nickel percentages ranging from 10% to 30%, along with trace amounts of iron and manganese. These alloys offer excellent resistance to corrosion, particularly in marine and seawater environments. The most common copper-nickel alloys used in sheet form are Cu-Ni 90/10 (90% copper, 10% nickel) and Cu-Ni 70/30 (70% copper, 30% nickel). Key Features of Copper Nickel Sheets: Corrosion Resistance: Exceptional resistance to seawater corrosion, including stress corrosion, biofouling, and erosion-corrosion. This makes them ideal for marine environments. Anti-Fouling Properties: Copper-nickel alloys naturally resist the buildup of marine organisms on their surfaces. Thermal and Electrical Conductivity: Good thermal conductivity, making them suitable for heat exchangers, condensers, and other thermal applications. Weldability and Fabrication: Easily welded and fabricated, allowing for complex shapes and structures in shipbuilding and other industrial applications. Common Grades of Copper Nickel Sheets: Cu-Ni 90/10 (UNS C70600): Composition: 90% Copper, 10% Nickel, with traces of iron and manganese. Corrosion Resistance: Excellent in marine and industrial environments with moderate temperatures. Applications: Heat exchangers, condenser tubes, marine piping, and offshore oil platforms. Cu-Ni 70/30 (UNS C71500): Composition: 70% Copper, 30% Nickel, with a higher percentage of nickel and traces of iron and manganese. Corrosion Resistance: Superior to Cu-Ni 90/10, especially in higher temperature applications and aggressive environments. Applications: Desalination plants, power generation, and marine engineering where maximum corrosion resistance is required. Chemical Composition of Common Copper-Nickel Alloys: Cu-Ni 90/10 (C70600): Copper (Cu): 86.0-90.0% Nickel (Ni): 9.0-11.0% Iron (Fe): 1.0-1.8% Manganese (Mn): Max 1.0% Cu-Ni 70/30 (C71500): Copper (Cu): 65.0-70.0% Nickel (Ni): 29.0-33.0% Iron (Fe): 0.4-0.9% Manganese (Mn): Max 1.0%
