The Bimetallic Strip is a simple yet ingenious component designed to convert a change in temperature into mechanical displacement, consisting of two strips of different metals—such as steel and brass—that are securely bonded together along their length. This function is based on the principle of differential thermal expansion, where the two metals possess different coefficients of thermal expansion; when heated or cooled, the strip bends toward the metal with the lower coefficient, since the other metal expands or contracts more dramatically, making it an incredibly durable, cost-effective, and essential sensor and actuator used widely in devices like thermostats, thermal circuit breakers, and mechanical thermometers to control or measure temperature.
