ER80S-B2 is a low-alloy steel welding wire used primarily in gas metal arc welding (GMAW/MIG) and gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW/TIG) processes. It is classified under the AWS A5.28 specification, which covers low-alloy steel filler metals. The designation "80" refers to the minimum tensile strength of the weld metal (80,000 psi), while the "S" indicates a solid wire, and "B2" identifies the specific alloy composition—primarily a 1.25% chromium and 0.5% molybdenum (Cr-Mo) steel. ER80S-B2 is designed for welding creep-resistant and heat-resistant steels, particularly those used in high-temperature and high-pressure applications. It is commonly used in the fabrication of power boilers, pressure vessels, piping systems, and heat exchangers in industries such as power generation, petrochemical, and oil and gas. The added chromium and molybdenum provide improved strength at elevated temperatures, as well as increased resistance to oxidation and corrosion in high-heat environments. This filler metal is typically used with a shielding gas, such as argon or argon/CO₂ mixtures, depending on the welding process.
