Electrostatic charge meters detect the electric field or charge on an object or surface by either:

1. Capacitance measurement: The meter detects the difference in capacitance between the sensor and the charged object. The capacitance changes depending on the electric charge of the surface, which the meter then translates into a voltage or charge measurement.
2. Electric field measurement: The meter measures the strength of the electric field produced by the static charge on a surface. This method is often used when measuring areas with uneven or unpredictable charge distributions.

   • Purpose: Portable devices designed for on-the-go measurement of static charge on surfaces.
   • Applications: Ideal for checking the static charge on clothing, machinery, or production lines.
   • Features: Typically have a probe or a sensor that you can move around a surface. They may display readings in volts or other units of electrostatic potential.

2. Field Meters:

   • Purpose: Measure the electric field intensity around an object to determine the electrostatic environment in a particular area.
   • Applications: Used in environments where electrostatic discharge (ESD) can damage electronic components, such as semiconductor manufacturing plants or areas that assemble sensitive electronic devices.
   • Features: Some field meters are highly sensitive and can provide a real-time reading of electrostatic fields.
