Product Details
A fire hose reel is a specialized firefighting appliance designed to provide a continuous and immediate supply of water to combat Class A fires (involving wood, paper, textiles, and rubber).
Unlike fire extinguishers, which have a limited discharge time, a fire hose reel is connected directly to the building's mains water supply, allowing it to be used for extended periods until emergency services arrive.
1. Key Components-
Reel Drum: A cylindrical spindle (usually powder-coated steel) that stores the hose.
-
The Hose: Typically 30 meters in length with an internal diameter of 19mm or 25mm. It is made of non-kink, UV-stabilized thermoplastic or reinforced rubber.
-
Shut-off Valve: Located at the base of the reel. In manual versions, this must be opened before the hose is pulled; in automatic versions, the water flows as soon as the reel begins to rotate.
-
Nozzle: An adjustable tip that allows the operator to switch between a Jet (long-range) or Spray/Mist (wide-area cooling) pattern.
| Feature | Manual Fire Hose Reel | Automatic Fire Hose Reel |
| Operation | Requires the user to manually open the stop valve before use. | Water flow is triggered automatically after 2-3 rotations of the drum. |
| Complexity | Simple, fewer internal moving parts. | Features an internal automatic valve. |
| Common Use | General commercial/industrial use. | High-traffic areas or where speed of response is critical. |
-
Fixed Type: Mounted flat against a wall. The hose must be pulled off in a direction mostly parallel to the wall. It is the most cost-effective and sturdy option.
-
Swing Type (Swing Arm): The entire drum is mounted on a pivoting arm that can swing out 180°. This is essential for mounting in recessed cabinets or narrow corridors where the hose needs to be pulled in any direction without catching on corners.
-
Class A Only: Never use a fire hose reel on electrical fires (Class E). Water is a conductor, and you risk electrocution. Also avoid use on grease/fat fires (Class F), as it will cause the fire to splash and spread.
-
The Two-Person Rule: Ideally, one person operates the nozzle while a second person ensures the hose unwinds smoothly and doesn't snag on doors or furniture.
-
Maintain Your Distance: Stand back and use the "Jet" setting to knock down flames from a safe distance before moving in closer with the "Spray" setting.
Fire hose reels must be inspected regularly to ensure they work when needed most:
-
6-Monthly: Visual inspection for leaks, dust, and clear access.
-
Annually: A full operational test where the hose is completely run out, pressurized, and checked for cracks or "weeping." The flow rate and pressure are measured to ensure they meet local safety codes.
-
Signage: A standard "Fire Hose Reel" sign must be mounted above the unit, visible from at least 20 meters.
