A vertical bandsaw, also called a contour saw, keeps the blade's path stationary while the workpiece is moved across it. This type of saw can be used to cut out complex shapes and angles. The part may be fed into the blade manually or with a power assist mechanism.Vertical band saws utilize a thin metal “ribbon like” loop with teeth directed downward to cut materials. Vertical band saws are different from other fixed shop saws as they can make three types of cuts: • Cross cuts or “cutoffs”- cuts made perpendicular to the long axis of the work piece.A horizontal band saw uses a thin, flexible, continuous steel strip with cutting teeth on one edge. Horizontal band saws are used primarily for cutting metal stock, such as angle iron and other round and flat stock. Cuts are made by a blade that has long sharp teeth continuously rolling in loop through material. The blade rotates on wheel (drive and idler wheel). A table attached with band saw is used to place material that gets grip by vise.With the correct blade, a band saw can cut wood or metal, in either curves or straight lines. Blades come in a variety of widths and tooth counts. Narrower blades are good for tighter curves, while wider blades are better at straight cuts.
