The basic ingredients of an incense stick are bamboo sticks, paste (generally made of charcoal dust or sawdust and joss//gum/powder – an adhesive made from the bark of and other trees), and the perfume ingredients – which traditionally would be a masala (powder of ground ingredients), though Agar is traditionally made by hand – by rolling bamboo sticks in an incense paste or a dough made of various ingredients, and is a labour intensive industry. Of late, some companies have started to employ machines to beat the tough competition from Chinese exporters, who mostly market machine-made . They are popular in India owing to several reasons but the most common one is that they are used in religious ceremonies. Agar are also said to have medicinal properties and can be used to treat a wide range of ailments. Additionally, they are often used as mosquito repellents. It wasn't until the early 1900s that the Maharaja, King of Mysore, first created the idea to roll the incense paste on bamboo sticks, and under his supervision it developed into a popular art as the newly shaped incense was accepted joyfully by the public.
