A guillotine damper (also referred to as a slide gate damper) is a heavy-duty industrial isolation device designed to completely shut off the flow of air, flue gas, dust-laden gas, or process gas within a ducting or piping system. Named for its mechanical resemblance to a traditional guillotine, it operates via a flat, single-bladed gate that slides vertically or horizontally across the internal duct opening along designated metal guides to form an uncompromising wall barrier.Unlike rotary or multi-blade louvre dampers that merely modulate airflow by pivoting inside the stream, guillotine dampers are engineered almost exclusively for strict, positive isolation rather than continuous flow regulation.Fully Open State: The flat plate (or flap) is completely retracted out of the gas path into an external frame structure or bonnet. By leaving the duct entirely unobstructed, it minimizes turbulence and provides an exceptionally low-pressure drop across the system.Fully Closed State: Driven by an electrical actuator, pneumatic cylinders, or manual chain falls, the blade slides steadily along load bars and seats tightly against a peripheral-seal system. The load bars provide rigid structural strength, keeping the blade from deflecting or bending under severe system pressure.Guillotine dampers generally fall into two primary configurations depending on system safety requirements:Low Leak / Class I Isolation: Employs precise metal-to-metal or flexible mechanical seals around the blade perimeter, achieving high gas tightness up to 99.98%.
