Product Details
This commercial bread-slicing machine was designed and manufactured in 1928 by Otto Frederick Rohwedder (1880-1960). It was used to slice loaves of fresh bakery bread at Korn's Bakery, in Rohwedder's home town of Davenport, Iowa, beginning in late 1928.The slicer works based on a gravity-feed system where the weight of the loaves in the slicer puts pressure on the blades. The feed chute can hold between five and seven identical loaves. They hold the loaves in place to ensure that each one is cut cleanly and precisely.The first automatically sliced commercial loaves were produced on July 6, 1928, in Chillicothe, Missouri, using the machine invented by Otto Rohwedder, an Iowa-born, Missouri-based jeweler. Rohwedder's quest to make sliced bread a reality was not without its challenges.
