After that, the water is forced through the resin. The resin becomes exhausted after a service run and is unable to remove additional ions, so it must be regenerated with strong acid and base solutions to restore its ion exchange capacity.
To refine product water and obtain demineralized water quality, water treatment operators prefer to use mixed bed deionization resins. The mixed bed is composed of long-lasting acid cation exchange resin and strong base anion exchange resin.
