A reverse osmosis membrane is a semi-permeable membrane that allows the passage of water molecules but not the majority of dissolved salts, organics, bacteria and pyrogens.Reverse osmosis (RO) membranes are commonly thin film composite (TFC) membranes consisting in a polyamide (PA) active layer (∼50–250 nm thickness), supported by an asymmetric polysulphone support (∼50 μm thickness) and a non-woven polyester fabric backing (∼300 μm thickness) (Petersen, 1993)For RO to function, a minimum pressure of 1 psi is required for every 100 ppm of TDS. In this case, 15 psi of pressure is needed to force a single drop of water through the membrane. This is known as Osmotic Pressure (Π) and is calculated by the equation (Π = TDS/100).
