In manual metal arc (MMA) welding (Figure 3.2), the arc is struck between a consumable electrode and the workpiece being welded. The electrode rod is melted at the tip of the arc and metal droplets fall into the weldpool. Thus, as welding progresses the welding electrode becomes shorter.
