There was a time DC silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR) power motors and DC motors with a permanent magnet field were the main solutions for applications requiring variable-speed performance. Although AC induction motors offered cost savings over their DC cousins, extracting variable-speed performance from an induction motor required either motor/alternator combinations or a mechanical adjustable-speed pulley system. All that changed in the 1980s, when solid-state power electronics enabled the development of a practical AC inverter drive. Advances in power electronics made getting variable-speed performance from an AC motor more practical and cost effective.
