A water softener doesn't have a "maximum" hardness removal in the sense of an infinite capacity; its capacity is measured in grains, and it removes a specific number of grains of hardness between regenerations. The maximum amount of hardness a softener can remove is determined by its size in "grains" (e.g., a 30,000-grain or 48,000-grain system) and the hardness level of the incoming water, which needs to be calculated daily to size the unit properly. A softener is set to operate at about 80% of its theoretical capacity to ensure it provides soft water throughout the day before needing to regenerate.
