Key Processes in a Palm Oil Refinery: Degumming: Removal of phospholipids and gums from crude palm oil by using water or acid. Neutralizing: Free fatty acids (FFAs) are removed by neutralizing with an alkali solution (typically caustic soda). Decolorizing: The oil is treated with activated carbon or bleaching earth to remove pigments, making the oil light-colored and more visually appealing. Deodorizing: Steam distillation is used to remove odors and volatile compounds, ensuring the oil has a neutral taste and odor. Winterization: The oil is cooled to remove solid fats (like stearin), which is particularly important for oils used in food products to prevent cloudiness at low temperatures. Filtration: The oil is passed through filters to remove any remaining impurities. Palm oil refineries also ensure that the final product meets quality standards for edible oils and various industrial applications. Refined palm oil is widely used in cooking, as well as in products such as margarine, soap, biodiesel, and cosmetics.
