Aluminium sulfate, also known as alum, is used in papermaking as a sizing agent, particularly in conjunction with rosin soap, to control the paper's absorbency and improve its ink-holding properties. While it has been largely replaced by synthetic sizing agents, alum is still used in certain applications, especially when making acidic paper.
