The name ball valve comes from the ball that is attached inside the valve. This is used to control the flow of the water and to turn it on/off. When the handle is turned to the right side, the ball is rotated 90 degree which allows the water to flow. When the handle is turned left, the ball comes to the original position and therefore, the flow of the water stops.
