A pH and temperature meter is an analytical instrument designed to measure the acidity or alkalinity of a liquid (0–14 pH scale) while simultaneously measuring its temperature, usually featuring Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC) for accuracy. It uses a glass electrode to detect hydrogen ion activity and a built-in sensor to correct for temperature-induced voltage changes. Key Components & Features pH Sensor: A glass electrode, often combined with a reference electrode (composite probe), produces a voltage based on concentration. Temperature Sensor/ATC: Crucial for compensating for the fact that pH readings fluctuate with temperature. Display & Electronics: Converts millivolt () signals from the probe into a pH value, usually in 2–10 seconds. Calibration Control: Allows calibration (usually 1, 2, or 3 points) with standard buffer solutions for precise readings. Key Features Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC): Automatically adjusts the pH reading for temperature fluctuations based on the Nernst equation. Calibration: Requires regular "standardisation" using buffer solutions (typically pH 4.0, 7.0, and 10.0) to maintain accuracy. Types of Meters: Benchtop: High-precision, stationary units for laboratories. Handheld/Portable: Durable, battery-powered meters for field use. Pen-style: Compact, affordable, "all-in-one" pocket testers for quick checks. Maintenance and Care Storage: Always store the electrode in a specialized storage solution (like 3M KCl); never use distilled or deionized water for long-term storage as it can damage the sensor. Cleaning: Rinse with distilled water after every use and use a specialized cleaning solution if the probe becomes contaminated with proteins or oils. Fragility: The glass bulb is extremely fragile—avoid touching it with your hands or stirring solutions with the probe.
