A pipe union is a type of fitting used to join two sections of pipe in a way that allows them to be disconnected without cutting the pipes. Unlike a permanent welded or solvent‐cemented joint, a union has a nut or threaded collar that can be unscrewed for easy disassembly and reinstallation. Key Features Three parts: typically a male end, a female end, and a central nut or collar. Seal mechanism: often includes an O-ring, gasket, or sealing surface to maintain a leak-tight joint. Materials: common materials include PVC (polyvinyl chloride), CPVC, or other plastics, resistant to corrosion, chemicals, and UV exposure. Connection types: socket (slip), threaded (male or female), or fusion type (depending on pipe system). Sizes: available in a range of diameters to match pipe sizes, e.g. ½", ¾", 1", 1.1/4" , 1.1/2" , 2", 3" , Pressure ratings: unions are rated for specific pressure classes (e.g. PN10, PN16, Schedule 40/80 in PVC systems). Ease of maintenance: allows removal or replacement of sections, valves, filters, etc., without disturbing the rest of the piping. Applications In irrigation systems (drip, sprinkler, mainlines) to enable maintenance access. In water treatment plants and plumbing systems for equipment removal and servicing.
