A Pressure Sand Filter (PSF) is an essential water treatment system designed to remove suspended solids, turbidity, dirt, dust, silt, and other particulate impurities from raw water. It is widely used in industrial, commercial, municipal, and residential water treatment applications to improve water clarity and ensure the supply of clean, filtered water for further processing or use.A Pressure Sand Filter operates on the principle of depth filtration, in which raw water is passed through a specially graded bed of filtration media under pressure. The filter generally consists of a robust Mild Steel (MS), FRP, or Stainless Steel vessel filled with layers of filtration media, such as fine sand, coarse sand, and gravel. These layers work together to trap suspended particles and impurities as water flows through the filter bed.During operation, raw water enters the filter vessel through an inlet distributor and flows downward through the sand media. Suspended particles are retained within the media bed, while clean and filtered water is collected through an underdrain or bottom distribution system and discharged through the outlet. The filtration process effectively reduces turbidity and suspended solids, making the water suitable for various industrial and commercial applications.Over time, the accumulated impurities increase the pressure drop across the filter bed and reduce filtration efficiency. To restore the filter's performance, a backwashing process is carried out. During backwashing, water flows in the reverse direction through the filter bed, loosening the sand media and flushing out the trapped dirt and suspended particles through the drain line.
