Rainsheds (or Rain Skirts) Purpose: Used in outdoor terminations to increase the creepage distance (the shortest distance along the surface of an insulator). Function: Their umbrella-like shape prevents a continuous path of water or pollution from forming, which helps avoid short circuits and flashovers during rainy or humid conditions. Material: Typically made from UV-stabilized, cross-linked polyolefin that is resistant to weathering. Breakouts (or Breakout Boots) Purpose: These are molded, multi-fingered parts used to seal the "crutch" area where a multicore cable separates into individual cores. Function: They provide a moisture-tight environmental seal and mechanical strain relief. Types: Available for 2-core to 7-core cables, they often feature an internal adhesive lining that melts during heat-shrinking to ensure a waterproof bond. HVOT (High Voltage Outdoor Termination) Anti-Tracking Tube Definition: A specialized heat-shrinkable tube specifically engineered for high-voltage environments (typically 7.2 kV to 42 kV). Anti-Tracking Property: "Tracking" is the formation of permanent conductive carbon paths on an insulator's surface. These tubes use a non-halogen polymer designed to resist this erosion and electrical discharge. Usage: It acts as the primary insulation layer for the individual cores in outdoor termination kits, providing high dielectric strength and resistance to UV and chemical damage. Typical Kit ApplicationsThese accessories are combined into sets for: Outdoor Terminations: Where maximum protection against rain, UV, and salt spray is required. Substations & Transformers: To safely connect overhead lines or underground cables to electrical equipment.
