These larger particles, called flocs, are easier to remove in subsequent stages. Sedimentation: The water is allowed to sit in large tanks, allowing the heavier flocs to settle to the bottom. This process, known as sedimentation or clarification, helps remove suspended solids and some organic matter. Filtration: The clarified water passes through various filtration media such as sand, gravel, and activated carbon. These filters further remove suspended particles, organic matter, and other impurities. Disinfection: To kill or deactivate any remaining pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites, the water is treated with disinfectants. Common disinfection methods include chlorination, ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, and ozonation. pH Adjustment: The pH level of the water may be adjusted using chemicals such as lime or soda ash to ensure it falls within the desired range for distribution and consumption. Desalination (if applicable): In regions where water scarcity is a concern, desalination processes such as reverse osmosis may be employed to remove salt and other dissolved minerals from seawater or brackish water. Fluoridation (optional): Fluoride may be added to the treated water in controlled amounts to prevent tooth decay and promote dental health. Storage and Distribution: The treated water is stored in reservoirs or tanks before being distributed through a network of pipes to homes, businesses, and other end-users.
