Costus Acid, Costol, Lactone, Dihydro Costus lactone. Essential Oil Information Costus Root is a large, erect, perennial plant up to 2m high with a thick tapering root and numerous black flowers. The dried roots are macerated in warm water then subjected to steam distillation to extract the oil. Oil Properties Yellow to brownish yellow viscous liquid with an extremely tenacious odor. Uses It is used as incense, as a fixative and fragrance component in cosmetics and perfumes. Therapeutic Properties Antiseptic, antispasmodic, antiviral, bactericidal, carminative, digestive, expectorant, febrifuge, stimulant, stomachic, and tonic. Blends Well With Patchouli, Opopanax, Ylang-ylang, and any oil with oriental and floral fragrances. Summary Costus Root Oil is one of rare essential oil, It is extracted using steam distilled from the comminuted, dried roots of Saussurea lappa. It is also extracted by using vacuum distillation of the resinoid extract obtained by extraction of the roots with solvents. It is a viscous, light yellow to brown liquid. It has a peculiar soft, but extremely tenacious odour, reminiscent of old precious wood, orris root, fatty (but not rancid) acids, vetiver, etc., with a distinctly animal or sebaceous undertone.
