ASME SA179 or ASTM A179 tubes is a type of seamless pipe material in carbon, with small wall thickness and diameters. (Most is required below 3 inches.) What is ASME SA 179 (ASTM A179) Standard Specification ASTM A179 (SA 179) standard specification covers seamless cold drawn low-carbon steel pipe, for tubular heat exchanger, condensers, and other similar heat transfer equipment. The ASTM A179 tube covers the OD from 1/8" to 3", which is 3.2m m to 76.2 mm. Other diameters and thicknesses smaller than the specified sizes also apply to this standard, but mechanical properties are not applicable for the size smaller than 1/8" and 3.2 mm, or thicknesses smaller than 0.015 inches 0.4 mm. ASTM A179 / SA 179 tubes chemical composition The chemical contents is C (Carbon) 0.06-0.18%, Mn (Manganese) 0.27-0.63%, P (Phosphorus) Max 0.035%, S (Sulfur) ≤ 0.035%. Moreover, in case supplied as an alloy grade that above specifications will not be applied. Material Mechanical properties The mechanical strength for ASTM A179 is min tensile strength 47 Ksi 325 Mpa, and min yield strength 26 Ksi 180 Mpa, elongation in 2 in or 50mm min at 35%. Test methods referred Hardness TestFlattening TestFlaring TestFlange TestHydrostatic Test (Each tube shall be done this test or a substitute nondestructive electric test) Marking Specification ASTM A179 / ASME SA179 tubes shall be marked according to standard of A450, with product name and order number.
