Our Saraswati Mata Ji is the Hindu goddess of knowledge, wisdom, music, arts, and speech. Representing the smooth flow of consciousness, her name stems from the Sanskrit roots saras (meaning flow or fluidity) and wati (meaning she who possesses), intimately linking her to the ancient, sacred Saraswati River. She forms a part of the divine tridevi (trinity) alongside Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Parvati. The physical description and appearance of Maa Saraswati are richly symbolic, with every element carrying a distinct spiritual lesson:Radiant White Complexion & Attire: She is depicted as a serene, beautiful woman draped in a pure white saree, sitting on a white lotus. The colour white represents Sattva Guna (purity, discrimination, and light), indicating that true knowledge is transparent and uncorrupted by worldly desires. As the inventor of the Sanskrit language and the "Mother of the Vedas", she is widely revered by students, scholars, musicians, and scientists. Her primary festival is Vasant Panchami (the fifth day of Spring), celebrated across India. On this day, infants are traditionally guided to write their first letters in an initiation ritual into education. Notably, her reverence transcends borders; she is venerated in Jainism, Buddhism, and across East Asia, including Japan as the deity Benzaiten. Maa Saraswati is accompanied by a Hamsa (white swan), though occasionally she is shown with a peacock. The swan holds the legendary ability to separate milk from water (Neera-Ksheera Viveka). This powerfully symbolises viveka—the critical capability to discern the eternal truth from transient illusion, and the good from the bad.
