A single row cylindrical roller bearing is a type of rolling-element bearing that uses cylindrical rollers (instead of balls) as rolling elements. These bearings are designed to carry high radial loads because the rollers provide a larger contact area with the raceways. Key Features Rollers: Cylindrical-shaped, providing line contact (not point contact like ball bearings). Single row: One row of rollers between the inner and outer race. Separability: Many types allow the inner and outer rings to be separated, which simplifies mounting and dismounting. High radial load capacity: Much higher than ball bearings of the same size. Axial load capacity: Limited, depending on the design of the bearing's flanges. Types (by flange design) NU type – Outer ring has two flanges, inner ring has none → free axial movement of shaft (ideal for expansion). N type – Inner ring has two flanges, outer ring has none → free axial movement. NJ type – Outer ring has two flanges, inner ring has one flange → supports limited axial load in one direction. NUP type – Outer ring has two flanges, inner ring has one fixed flange + one loose flange ring → supports limited axial load in both directions. Applications Gearboxes and transmissions Electric motors and generators Machine tool spindles Pumps and compressors Railway and heavy industrial machinery Advantages Very high radial load capacity compared to ball bearings Low friction for high-speed applications Interchangeable components (in separable types) Can handle thermal expansion of shafts (NU and N types) ✅ So in short: Best for: Heavy radial loads, moderate speeds. Not ideal for: Heavy axial loads (unless a specific type like NJ or NUP is used).
