Sodium methoxide is a chemical compound with the formula CH3ONa. It is commonly found as a white powder or a colorless to slightly yellowish solution in methanol. Sodium methoxide is a strong base and is primarily used as a catalyst in organic synthesis, particularly in the production of biodiesel from vegetable oils or animal fats through transesterification reactions. It facilitates the conversion of triglycerides into fatty acid methyl esters (FAME), which are the main components of biodiesel. Additionally, sodium methoxide finds application in pharmaceutical synthesis, as a reactant in the production of various chemicals, and as a reagent in organic chemistry laboratories. Due to its strong basic nature and reactivity, sodium methoxide must be handled with caution, as it can cause severe burns and is harmful if ingested or inhaled
