Benzoinis anorganic compoundwith the formula PhCH(OH)C(O)Ph. It is ahydroxy ketoneattached to twophenylgroups. It appears as off-white crystals, with a lightcamphor-like odor. Benzoin is synthesized frombenzaldehydein thebenzoin condensation. It is chiral and it exists as a pair of enantiomers (R)-benzoin and (S)-benzoin.Benzoin isnota constituent ofbenzoin resinobtained from thebenzoin tree(Styrax)ortincture of benzoin. The main component in these natural products isbenzoic acid.
